Kinds Of Cold

Here, there are several kinds of cold.

There is the merely "cold" which is like a fairly severe temperature in the deepest winter in north Texas, though in Texas, Antarctic "kold" is equal to Texas "Cold".

Then there is "brutal kold", which requires serious gear to mitigate.  The "big reds", which is to say, the parkas issued by National Science Foundation, are required, even if you don't wear the Carhart snow bibs.

Next, is "Brutal Kold".  This is the kind of cold in which you must cover exposed skin or you have a very real possibility of getting frost bite within 5-10 minutes.  Your big red is still enough to keep your core warm, but fingers, toes, knees, and exposed skin get painfully cold anyway within about 10 minutes.

Then there is "Brütal Köld" which is the kind where you get cold even with the parka and your Carhart.  This is the kind of cold that makes you want to give up.  It is the kind that comes from 100 degrees below freezing in Farenheit.

We have not reached "Brütal Köld" yet here at McMurdo.  But we definitely got to "Brutal Kold".
